Description

The accepted name Rhipsalis puniceodiscus G. Lindb. was published in Gartenflora 42: 233. 1893.

The geographic range is Brazil (Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina) found at elevations of 0-1400 meters with an endangered status of least concern.

Rhipsalis puniceodiscus is classified in the subgenus Calamorhipsalis.

Observed growing as an epiphyte. Overall habit is pendant, branches are monomorphic (single stem shape) and acrotonic or subacrotonic (stems form from the tips and just below tips of previous stems).

Stems are round, bristles are absent. Main stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 3cm-70cm x 0.3cm-0.5cm.

Flowers are rotate: sub-patent or patent (wheel shaped: partial to wide open), 0.9cm-1.5cm x 1cm-2.8cm. Petals from 8 to 10, sepals from 2 to 4. Inner petals are white or cream, outer petals are white, green or pink. Stamen are yellow, orange, pink, purple or red, from 40 to 80. Stigma lobes from 4 to 5. Flower ovary is subglobose or obconical, 0.21cm-0.7cm x 0.25cm-0.7cm.

Flowering position on the stem is lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is oblique. Does not repeat flowering per areole. A maximum of 1 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is deeply immersed (flower ovary is partially or fully hidden in the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is sparse at the areoles after flowering.

Unripe fruit is green, brown or red. Ripe fruit is globose or subglobose; yellow, yellow-orange, orange, brown or red, 0.5cm-1cm x 0.5cm-0.8cm.

Other notable features:
At times with a reddish or purplish coloring around the areoles, but that is not a good identifying characteristic for any species as R. baccifera subsp. mauritiana, R. neves-armondii, R. grandiflora, R. floccosa, and R. ewaldiana at least, also inconsistently exhibit this characteristic. Certain species can be more prone to producing betalains that color the stems reddish in higher light conditions, R. puniceodiscus is one of them, however stem color is not a good identifying characteristic for any species. It is highly inconsistent within the species populations.
