Description

The accepted name Rhipsalis cereuscula Haw. was published in Philos. Mag. Ann. Chem. 7: 112. 1830.

The geographic range is Argentina (Entre Ríos, Corrientes, Misiones); Bolivia, Plurinational States of; Brazil (Bahia, Santa Catarina, Alagoas, Minas Gerais, Sergipe, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Paraná, Espírito Santo); Paraguay; Uruguay found at elevations of 200-1400 meters with an endangered status of least concern.

Rhipsalis cereuscula is classified in the subgenus Erythrorhipsalis.

Observed growing as an epiphyte. Overall habit is pendant or semi-erect, branches are dimorphic (more than one stem shape) and acrotonic (stems form from the tips of previous stems).

Stems are round and 4 to 5 angled, bristles are absent to sparse. Basal stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 10cm-60cm x 0.2cm-0.5cm. Main stems are determinate (seasonal growth is about the same length), 0.5cm-12cm x 0.2cm-0.6cm.

Flowers are campanulate (bell shaped), 1.5cm-1.7cm x 0.5cm-2cm. Petals from 7 to 18, sepals from 4 to 7. Inner petals are white, cream, light-yellow or pink, outer petals are white, yellow, peach or pink. Stamen are white, pink or red, from 32 to 36. Stigma lobes from 3 to 7. Flower ovary is obconical, 0.3cm-0.55cm x 0.3cm-0.7cm.

Flowering position on the stem is apical and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is parallel. Does not repeat flowering per areole. A maximum of 3 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is absent at the areoles after flowering.

Unripe fruit is yellow, green or brown. Ripe fruit is obconical-ovoid; white, pink or red, 0.7cm x 0.5cm-0.6cm.

Other notable features:
While ripe fruit is most commonly reported as white there have been red variants reported. Can be confused with R. teres f. prismatica however the species are not closely related1,2 and exhibit different floral characteristics. R. cerescuala flowers are campanulate (bell shaped) while R. teres flowers are a wide open wheel shape.

Taxonomic treatment and description were derived from:
  • The referenced publications below
    • published material was examined and consolidated
      • to determine minimum and maximum size ranges
      • to determine color variations and shapes
  • In rare cases
    • if minimum and maximum values were unreported, authors examined their own materials
    • if clearly observed colors were unreported, authors expanded the botanical descriptions
