Description
| The accepted name Rhipsalis cereoides (Backeb. & Voll) Backeb. was published in Kakteen Pflanzen Samen. 1927-1937. The geographic range is Brazil (Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro) found at elevations of 200 meters with an endangered status of near threatened. Rhipsalis cereoides is classified in the subgenus Phyllarthrorhipsalis. Observed growing as an epiphyte or lithophyte. Overall habit is pendant or semi-erect, branches are monomorphic (single stem shape) and acrotonic (stems form from the tips of previous stems). Stems are 3 to 5 angled, margins have low crenations (slightly scalloped), bristles are absent. Main stems are determinate (seasonal growth is about the same length), 4cm-12cm x 0.7cm-2cm. Flowers are rotate: sub-patent or patent (wheel shaped: partial to wide open), 1cm x 1.5cm-2cm. Petals from 8 to 10, sepals from 1 to 4. Inner petals are white or green, outer petals are white, green, pink or red. Stamen are white, from 50 to 65. Stigma lobes from 4 to 6. Flower ovary is obconical, 0.35cm-0.4cm x unreported. Flowering position on the stem is lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is perpendicular. Does repeat flowering per areole. A maximum of 4 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is absent at the areoles after flowering. Unripe fruit is green, pink or red. Ripe fruit is globose; white or pink, 0.5cm-0.55cm x 0.5cm-1cm.
