The name Rhipsalis quellebambensis appears around 1955 in a catalog from Johnson Cactus Gardens, a nursery in Paramount California, it later appears in Cactus Lexicon by Curt Backeberg as R. quellebambensis Johns. n.nud., n.nud. is the abbreviation for nomen nudum, indicating the name was not validly published. Backeberg writes the plant is similar to R. cassutha (R. baccifera subsp. baccifera) with intensely red fruit from Peru.

Harry Johnson, the owner of Johnson Cactus Gardens, wrote an article Notes by Early Spanish Botanists in Peru in Cactus and Succulent Journal 1960:

Recently I have read abstracts from the journal of Sr. don Hipolito Ruiz of his botanical explorations in Peru and Chile during the years 1777-1787. The journals were not published until 1931 when R. P. A. J. Barriero, P.S.A., edited them in Madrid having received them from a descendant of Sr. Ruiz. An American translation was published by the Field Museum of Natural History, Volume 21, Botanical Series, 1940.

On page 178 he mentions Cactus parasiticus. He was at Pozuzo on the Rio Pozuzo about 80 kilometers directly east of Huanuco in a hot, wet valley. He probably refers to Rhipsalis cassutha or the red fruited variety I have called Rhipsalis quellebambensis. Another possibility is Mediocactus megalanthus. All of these plants are fairly widely distributed along the eastern side of the Andes in this general region. I found them on the Rio Huallaga not too far away.

If we look at occurrences from gbif.org we see a similar more recent record of R. baccifera subsp. baccifera collected in Pozuzo, Peru. The herbarium sheet states the fruit is pink: https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/4032125006. There are also records of R. baccifera subsp. baccifera with white fruit in Peru.

Fruit color in Rhipsalis can be highly variable, more pigmented fruit is often a result of a genetic predisposition to producing higher levels of betalains. Environmental factors, such as higher light, cooler temperatures, and pests, can also impact betalain production.

Later photographs, that appear to be misidentified as R. quellebambensis, in publications by Alfred Graf (photograph 1, photograph 2) and Ralph Baily (photograph 1) are of R. neves-armondii which often does have bright reddish fruit. These are likely cases of mistaken identification due the fruit color.

Description

The accepted name Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. baccifera (Sol. ex J. S. Muell.) Stearn was published in Cact. J. (Croydon) 7(4): 107, 1939.

The geographic range is Caribbean (also E Mexico & Florida), Central America and northern South America, south-wards to at least Paraiba state, North-eastern Brazil found at elevations of 0-1700 meters with an endangered status of least concern.

Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. baccifera is classified in the subgenus Rhipsalis.

Observed growing as an epiphyte or lithophyte. Overall habit is pendant, branches are dimorphic (more than one stem shape) and acrotonic (stems form from the tips of previous stems).

Stems are round, bristles are absent. Basal stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 20cm-60cm x 0.3cm-0.8cm. Main stems are determinate (seasonal growth is about the same length), 4cm-20cm x 0.2cm-0.8cm.

Flowers are rotate: sub-patent, patent or reflexed (wheel shaped: partial to wide open to reflexed), 0.5cm-0.8cm x 0.4cm-0.7cm. Petals from 4 to 8, sepals from 1 to 2. Inner petals are white, light-yellow, light-yellow-green or light-green, outer petals are white, cream, green, pink, brown or red. Stamen are white, from 9 to 25. Stigma lobes from 2 to 4. Flower ovary is globose or ovoid, 0.25cm-0.4cm x 0.25cm-0.275cm.

Flowering position on the stem is lateral to subapical and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is perpendicular. Does not repeat flowering per areole. A maximum of 2 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is absent at the areoles after flowering.

Unripe fruit is green or brown. Ripe fruit is globose or ovoid; white, white-green, pink or red, 0.2cm-0.75cm x 0.23cm-0.8cm.

Other notable features:
Closely related to1,2 and commonly confused with forms of R. teres, all R. baccifera subspecies can be distinguished by having a flower ovary that is typically longer than the petal parts of the flower during most of the bud of development, flowers are a pale yellow to white as they die, and remain attached to the flower ovary.

Comments:
Subspecies are often recognized at the extreme morphological characterization found in nature, however this species presents a high level of plasticity and varying intermediate morphologies are reported between the various subspecies.
