Description
| The accepted name Lepismium houlletianum f. houlletianum (Lem.) Barthlott was published in Bradleya 5: 99. 1987. The geographic range is Argentina; Argentina (Misiones); Brazil; Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo) found at elevations of 300-1900 meters with an endangered status of least concern. Lepismium houlletianum f. houlletianum is classified in the subgenus Lepismium. Observed growing as an epiphyte or lithophyte. Overall habit is pendant or semi-erect, branches are dimorphic (more than one stem shape) and mesotonic or acrotonic (stems form from the tips to middle of previous stems). Stems are round and 2 angled, margins have crenations, always dentate (scalloped, serrated like holly), bristles are absent. Basal stems are inderminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 30cm-130cm x 1.5cm-2cm. Main stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 10cm-45cm x 1cm-7.5cm. Flowers are campanulate or infundibuliform (bell or funnel shaped), 1.4cm-2cm x 0.8cm-2.6cm. Petals from 9 to 15, sepals from 6 to 8. Inner petals are white, cream, yellow or green, outer petals are white, cream, yellow or green. Stamen are white with a reddish or pale purplish base, from 20 to 37. Stigma lobes from 3 to 6. Flower ovary is cylindrical-angled, 0.3cm-0.8cm x 0.2cm-0.42cm. Flowering position on the stem is lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is oblique. It is unreported whether flowering repeats per areole. A maximum of 3 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is absent or sparse at the areoles after flowering. Unripe fruit is green. Ripe fruit is globose, subglobose or obconical-globose; red, purple or black, 0.5cm-1.1cm x 0.3cm-0.93cm. Taxonomic treatment and description were derived from:
