Description
| The accepted name Lepismium cruciforme (Vell.) Miq. was published in Bull. Sci. Phys. Nat. Néerl.: 49. 1838. The geographic range is Argentina; Argentina (Corrientes, Santa Fé); Brazil; Brazil (Pernambuco, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Tocantins, Rio Grande do Sul, São Paulo, Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais); Paraguay found at elevations of 0-1200 meters with an endangered status of least concern. Lepismium cruciforme is classified in the subgenus Lepismium. Observed growing as an epiphyte or lithophyte. Overall habit is pendant or semi-erect, branches are monomorphic (single stem shape) and mesotonic or acrotonic (stems form from the tips to middle of previous stems). Stems are 2 to 6 angled, margins have low to deep crenations (slightly to deeply scalloped), bristles are absent to sparse to dense. Main stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 2.5cm-60cm x 0.5cm-7.5cm. Flowers are campanulate or infundibuliform (bell or funnel shaped), 0.5cm-1.5cm x 0.2cm-1.5cm. Petals from 5 to 12, sepals from 3 to 5. Inner petals are white, cream, yellow, pink or red, outer petals are white, cream, yellow, yellow-green, pink, maroon, brown or red. Stamen are white or cream, from 44 to 60. Stigma lobes from 2 to 5. Flower ovary is cylindrical-angled, 0.2cm-0.94cm x 0.13cm-0.5cm. Flowering position on the stem is terminal to lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is oblique. Does repeat flowering per areole. A maximum of 5 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is semi-immersed (flower ovary is partially hidden in the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is dense at the areoles after flowering. Unripe fruit is green or pink. Ripe fruit is globose, subglobose or obconical-globose; pink, red, magenta or purple, 0.46cm-1.5cm x 0.4cm-1.2cm. Taxonomic treatment and description were derived from:
