Description
| The accepted name Lepismium lumbricoides f. aculeatum (F.A.C.Weber) Barthlott was published in Barthlott & N.P.Taylor in Bradleya 13: 48. 1995. The geographic range is north-western Argentina found at elevations of unreported meters with an endangered status of least concern. Lepismium lumbricoides f. aculeatum is classified in the subgenus Ophiorhipsalis. Observed growing as an epiphyte or lithophyte. Overall habit is pendant, branches are monomorphic (single stem shape) and subacrotonic or mesotonic (stems form from the tips to middle of previous stems). Stems are round and 8 to 10 angled, bristles are sparse to dense. Main stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), unreported x 0.3cm-0.4cm. Flowers are campanulate or infundibuliform (bell or funnel shaped), 1.3cm-2.4cm x 1.5cm-2cm. Petals 7, sepal count is unreported. Inner petals are white, yellow or pink, outer petals are white, yellow, green, pink or purple. Stamen are white, from 20 to 60. Stigma lobes from 3 to 8. Flower ovary is cylindrical-angled, 0.4cm-0.7cm x 0.3cm-0.35cm. Flowering position on the stem is lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is oblique. It is unreported whether flowering repeats per areole. A maximum of 1 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is absent or sparse at the areoles after flowering. Unripe fruit is purple. Ripe fruit is globose or subglobose; maroon, purple or black, 0.6cm-0.8cm x 0.5cm-0.8cm. Other notable features: Resembles some Rhipsalis species when not in flower, easy to distinguish by the prominent triangular scales at the areoles. Form is described as being distinguishable from L. lumbricoides f. lumbricoides by the stiffer spines that radiate out from each areole and do not fall of with age. Spines were sometimes described as yellow. Taxonomic treatment and description were derived from:
