Description

The accepted name Rhipsalis flagelliformis N. P. Taylor & Zappi was published in Bradleya 32: 4. 2014.

The geographic range is Brazil (north-eastern part of Rio de Janeiro state, near Parque Estadual do Desengano) found at elevations of unreported meters with an endangered status of critically endangered.

Rhipsalis flagelliformis is classified in the subgenus Goniorhipsalis.

Observed growing as an epiphyte or lithophyte. Overall habit is pendant, branches are monomorphic (single stem shape) and acrotonic or subacrotonic (stems form from the tips and just below tips of previous stems).

Stems are 4 to 7 angled, bristles are dense. Main stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 11cm-200cm x 0.8cm-1cm.

Flowers are rotate: sub-patent or patent (wheel shaped: partial to wide open), 0.35cm x 0.7cm. Petals 5, sepal count is unreported. Inner petals are white or pink, outer petals are pink or red. Stamen are white, from 24 to 27. Stigma lobes 4. Flower ovary is subglobose, unreported x 0.35cm.

Flowering position on the stem is lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is oblique. Does repeat flowering per areole. A maximum of 1 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is sparse at the areoles after flowering.

Unripe fruit is red or brown. Ripe fruit is globose; white or pink, unreported x 0.5cm.

Other notable features:
R. flagelliformis is easily identified by it's long indeterminate, consistently 4+ angled stems with bristles at the areoles. It is proposed R. flagelliformis is most closely related to R. pacheco-leonis subsp. pacheco-leonis based on molecular phylogenetic samples1.
