Description

The accepted name Lepismium floribundum Süpplie was published in Rhipsalis and Lepismium: 65. 2007.

The geographic range is Southern Brazil found at elevations of unreported meters with an endangered status of data deficient.

Lepismium floribundum is classified in the subgenus Lepismium.

Observed growing as an epiphyte. Overall habit is pendant or semi-erect, branches are monomorphic (single stem shape) and mesotonic or acrotonic (stems form from the tips to middle of previous stems).

Stems are 2 to 4 angled, margins have low to deep crenations (slightly to deeply scalloped), bristles are absent. Main stems are indeterminate (seasonal growth is various lengths), 4.5cm-90cm x 1.2cm-4.5cm.

Flowers are campanulate or infundibuliform (bell or funnel shaped), 1.5cm x 1.6cm. Petals 11, sepals 3. Inner petals are white, cream or pink, outer petals are white, cream, pink, maroon or red. Stamen are white, from 30 to 44. Stigma lobes from 4 to 5. Flower ovary is cylindrical-angled, 0.4cm-0.5cm x 0.2cm-0.3cm.

Flowering position on the stem is lateral and the flower orientation in relation to the stem is oblique. It is unreported whether flowering repeats per areole. A maximum of 1 flowers were reported at a single areole. Areole position in the stems is superficial (flower ovary is visible on the surface of the stems during bud development). Trichomes or wool is absent, sparse or dense at the areoles after flowering.

Unripe fruit is red. Ripe fruit is globose, subglobose or obconical-globose; pink or magenta, unreported x unreported.

The World Checklist of Vascular Plants recognizes it as a species. Plant material has not been sampled and evaluated in any molecular phylogenetic study.

Taxonomic treatment and description were derived from:
  • The referenced publications below
    • published material was examined and consolidated
      • to determine minimum and maximum size ranges
      • to determine color variations and shapes
  • In rare cases
    • if minimum and maximum values were unreported, authors examined their own materials
    • if clearly observed colors were unreported, authors expanded the botanical descriptions
